What is Hedging?
Hedging is placing a bet on the opposite outcome to guarantee profit or minimize loss. Common in futures bets, parlays, or when odds shift dramatically.
Example
You bet $100 on Lakers +500 to win championship:
- Lakers make finals, now -200 to win
- Hedge $400 on opponent
- If Lakers win: win $600, lose $400 = +$100 profit
- If opponent wins: lose $100, win $200 = +$100 profit
When to Hedge
- Last leg of a parlay for guaranteed profit
- Futures bet when team reaches finals
- Large potential payout you want to secure
- Significant odds movement in your favor
